Joomla!™ Content

Understanding the Structure

This tutorial will show you how to manage your content in Joomla. After reading this page you will be able to structure your articles in the most convenient way. In order to create the desired hierarchy of your information, you need first to gain understanding of the classes of content that are included in Joomla. Those are sections, categories and content items.

The highest level in the hierarchy is represented by the Sections. These can be managed through the Section Manager of the Content menu. Imagine the Sections as the drawers in a cupboard that contain the folders (categories), filled with articles (content items). If you are having a Joomla website about cars, you will have the sections 'Ford', 'Chevy' and 'Dodge'. The 'Ford' section will have categories 'Mustang', 'Thunderbird' and 'Taurus'. The 'Mustang' category will have content items 'V6GT', 'Steeda Q' and 'Shelby Cobra GT500'.

Creating a Section

First scroll over Content at the top of the Joomla Backend Administration Page, and click Section Manager. After you are at the Section Manager Section click New near the top right corner. You are then able to name your section, give a description, as well as assign basic permissions based on user type.

Creating a Category

First scroll over Content at the top of the Joomla Backend Administration Page, and click Category Manager. After you are at the Category Manager Section click New near the top right corner. You are then able to name your section, give a description, as well as assign basic permissions based on user type. It is Very Important that you assign a Section to the Category, this is the point of setting up the hierarchy.

Creating and Managing your Joomla Content

First scroll over Content at the top of the Joomla Backend Administration Page, and click Article Manager. After you are at the Article Manager Section click New near the top right corner. You are then able to name your article, enter article content, select both a section and category, as well as assign basic permissions based on user type.

After your Article is created you can go back into the Article Manager and reopen the Article/Content edit its contents, as well as change the section/category, and any permissions. Sound easy enough?
